The Mini-Mash/Lauter is a mash tun and lautering tub combined. The lauter tub is the vessel used to separate the sugars or sweet wort from the mash solids. It is the most widely used method of wort separation in the world today. In other words, the lauter tub is a filtering system where the husks and other un-dissolved matter, acts as the filter. The vessel is usually round and shallow; approximately one unit high and three units wide. This dimension describes the Hobby Beverage Manufacturing Company Mini-Mash/Lauter. The vessel is seventeen inches in diameter and twenty-two inches high. The false bottom is one and one half inches above the true bottom. The remaining seven inches of grain depth is ideal for all recipes requiring five to thirty pounds of grain. A pump for (RIMs) may be added by connecting a pump to fittings that are provided. The purpose of a mash tun is to cook the grains. The cooking process dissolves the starches into fermentable sugars. Most commercial breweries today cook the cereal in a separate vessel. Combining the mashing and lautering process has proven to be very effective and was very popular before the advent of everyday beer. The thick polyethylene walls will maintain the heat longer than stainless steel or copper. There are two general mash methods in use today. They are infusion and decoction. The Mini-Mash/Lauter is designed for infusion mashing. The mash water temperature can be regulated by adjusting the water temperature in the Mini-Hot Liquor Tank. With many exciting new grains being imported into the United States today, you have the opportunity to extract some very exciting tastes.
